Peru Travel Guide
Inca citadels, Andean landscapes, and world-class cuisine
Why Visit Peru?
Peru has two things that no other country can match: Machu Picchu, which genuinely lives up to the hype (I’ve been twice and cried both times), and Lima, which has quietly become the world’s most exciting food city. In 11 years of travel writing, few destinations surprise me as much as Peru continues to — the history runs deep, the landscapes are dramatic, and the food is simply extraordinary.

How Much Does Peru Cost?
Food & Drink in Peru
Ceviche
Peru’s national dish and gift to the world — raw fish ‘cooked’ in lime juice with red onion and ají amarillo chilli. Lima’s cevicherías serve the definitive version.
Lomo Saltado
Chinese-Peruvian (chifa) fusion stir-fry of beef, tomatoes, and chips served with rice — a perfect example of Peru’s extraordinary multicultural cuisine.
Causa
Cold layered potato terrine filled with chicken, avocado, and ají amarillo — Peru’s most elegant street snack and a masterclass in the country’s 4,000 potato varieties.
Pisco Sour
Peru’s national cocktail — pisco grape brandy shaken with lime, egg white, and bitters. The Peru vs. Chile argument about its origin is passionate and ongoing.
Getting Around Peru
Peru’s geography makes domestic flights essential for covering distance efficiently. Lima to Cusco takes just 1h20 — the overland alternative is 20+ hours. LATAM Peru and Sky Airline have frequent, affordable routes.
The Inca Rail and Peru Rail trains from Cusco to Aguas Calientes (the gateway to Machu Picchu) are scenic and comfortable — book well in advance as they sell out. The Inca Trail 4-day trek requires permits booked months ahead.
FAQ — Peru
Do I need a visa for Peru?
Most Western nationalities (EU, US, UK, Canada, Australia) can visit Peru visa-free for 90 days, often extendable at the immigration office in Lima.
What is the best time to visit Machu Picchu?
April to October (dry season) is ideal — clear skies for views and no rain on the Inca Trail. June–August is peak season: wonderful weather but book everything well in advance. The rainy season (November–March) brings fewer tourists and lush green scenery.
How do I deal with altitude sickness in Peru?
Cusco sits at 3,400m. Spend 1–2 days acclimatising before heavy activity. Drink coca tea, avoid alcohol initially, take it slow. Altitude medication (acetazolamide) is available at pharmacies and is worth considering.
How do I get to Machu Picchu?
Fly Lima–Cusco (1h20). Take the train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes (1.5–3.5 hours depending on departure point). Take the bus up from Aguas Calientes to the entrance (25 minutes) or hike the 1.5-hour trail.
Is Peru expensive?
Peru is excellent value. Budget travel (€35–60/day) is very manageable. The main costs are the Machu Picchu entrance (€40–50) and Lima’s top restaurants (€40–80 for a full tasting menu, which is still extraordinary value for world-class cuisine).
