Jordan Travel Guide
Petra, Wadi Rum, and the warmest hospitality in the Middle East
Why Visit Jordan?
Jordan surprised me at every turn. Petra is as extraordinary as promised — but Wadi Rum at night genuinely moved me, and the Jordanian people were consistently the most warm and generous I’ve encountered in 11 years of travel. Jordan is safe, compact, and historically rich beyond almost anywhere else on earth. It remains profoundly underrated.

How Much Does Jordan Cost?
Food & Drink in Jordan
Mansaf
Jordan’s national dish — lamb slow-cooked in dried yogurt (jameed) sauce served over rice with almonds and pine nuts. Eaten communally with the right hand from a shared platter.
Falafel & Hummus
Jordan’s street food triumvirate — falafel wraps, creamy hummus with olive oil, and fresh flatbread from the bakery. Breakfast, lunch, snack, or dinner.
Maqluba
‘Upside-down’ — a pot of rice, vegetables, and meat flipped onto a platter. One of the Levant’s most celebratory dishes.
Arabic Coffee
Cardamom-spiced unsweetened coffee (gahwa) served in tiny cups — the traditional greeting in every Bedouin tent and Jordanian home. Always accept the first cup.
Getting Around Jordan
Jordan is relatively compact. JETT buses and shared taxis (service taxis) connect Amman, Aqaba, and major tourist sites affordably. The King’s Highway from Amman to Aqaba passing Petra, Wadi Rum, and Kerak Castle is best driven by rental car over 2–3 days.
Rental cars give maximum flexibility for the King’s Highway and Wadi Rum approaches. Taxis are cheap in Amman. Hire a driver for Petra and Wadi Rum from most hotels for a very reasonable day rate.
FAQ — Jordan
Do I need a visa for Jordan?
Most Western nationalities (EU, US, UK, Canada, Australia) can get a visa on arrival at Amman airport (€25) or an e-Visa online. The Jordan Pass (€70–80) includes the visa AND entrance to Petra and 40+ other sites — excellent value if visiting Petra.
What is the Jordan Pass and is it worth it?
The Jordan Pass bundles the tourist visa and entrance to Petra (€50 for 1 day), Jerash (€6), and 40+ other sites. If you’re visiting Petra and flying into Amman, it almost always pays for itself.
Is Jordan safe?
Jordan is one of the Middle East’s safest and most stable countries, consistently welcoming millions of tourists annually. Jordanians are extraordinarily hospitable. Check current advice for border areas with Syria and Iraq.
What is the best time to visit Petra?
March–May and September–November are ideal — comfortable temperatures (20–28°C) and clear skies. June–August is very hot (35–40°C) but crowd-free. Petra By Night (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday) adds a candle-lit magic to the Treasury.
What makes Jordan unique?
Jordan concentrates an extraordinary density of historical sites — Petra (Nabataean), Jerash (Roman), Madaba (Byzantine mosaics), Crusader castles, and Islamic architecture — plus the Wadi Rum desert and Dead Sea, all in a country smaller than Portugal.
