Oman Travel Guide
Ancient forts, Arabian desert, and the Gulf’s most genuine welcome
Why Visit Oman?
Oman was the Gulf country that made me understand what the region could be without the spectacle. Where Dubai builds higher, Oman goes deeper — into tradition, into landscape, into genuine hospitality. The Wahiba Sands desert at night, the wadi swimming holes of the Hajar Mountains, the Mutrah Souk at dusk — Oman offers a Middle East that feels ancient, real, and welcoming in equal measure.

How Much Does Oman Cost?
Food & Drink in Oman
Shuwa
Oman’s celebratory dish — whole goat or lamb marinated in spices, wrapped in banana leaves, and slow-cooked in an underground sand oven for 24–48 hours. Extraordinary.
Majboos
Spiced rice with meat (lamb or chicken) cooked together with dried limes, saffron, and rose water — the Gulf’s definitive biryani.
Omani Qahwa
Cardamom-heavy Arabic coffee infused with saffron and rose water, served with dates — Oman’s most important gesture of hospitality.
Grilled Kingfish
Oman’s long coastline produces excellent fresh fish — kingfish, hamour, and tuna grilled simply at any harbour-side restaurant.
Getting Around Oman
Rental cars are the definitive way to explore Oman — roads are excellent, signage is clear, and the country rewards self-drive exploration. A 4WD is necessary for Wahiba Sands and mountain wadis.
Domestic flights connect Muscat and Salalah (1h45) — particularly useful in monsoon season when the drive south is very long. Shared taxis and local buses cover major routes affordably.
FAQ — Oman
Do I need a visa for Oman?
Most Western nationalities (EU, US, UK, Canada, Australia) can get an e-Visa online before travel (€20–25) for 30 days, extendable to 60 days. Apply at evisa.rop.gov.om.
What is the best time to visit Oman?
October to March is ideal for Muscat and the north — temperatures 20–28°C. Salalah is uniquely beautiful during the khareef monsoon (July–September) when it turns green. April–June and August–September in the north are very hot (40°C+).
Is Oman safe?
Oman is consistently rated one of the safest countries in the world, and one of the most welcoming in the Middle East. Crime rates are extremely low. Omanis are known across the region for their warmth and generosity to visitors.
What makes Oman different from Dubai or Abu Dhabi?
Oman deliberately chose authenticity over spectacle. No mega-malls or record-breaking towers — instead, restored forts, traditional souks, ancient aflaj irrigation systems, and landscapes (desert, mountain, coast, fjord) of extraordinary beauty. The pace is slower and the culture more accessible.
What activities is Oman famous for?
Wadi hiking and swimming (Wadi Shab, Wadi Bani Khalid), dune driving in Wahiba Sands, dolphin watching in Muscat Bay, cave exploration at Majlis al Jinn (one of the world’s largest caverns), and traditional dhow cruises along the Musandam fjords.
