Turkey Travel Guide
Byzantine mosaics, hot air balloons, and kebabs that redefine the word
Why Visit Turkey?
Turkey is one of those countries that consistently outperforms its reputation. Istanbul alone is worth the trip — I’ve been four times and still find new corners. Cappadocia’s landscape is genuinely alien — the kind of place that makes you feel you’ve landed on a different planet. And the food is extraordinary, largely still undiscovered by the world in the way it deserves.

Food & Drink in Turkey
Kebab
Turkey invented the kebab in its many forms — doner, Adana, iskender, şiş — and every regional variation is worth trying at its source.
Imam Bayildi
‘The imam fainted’ — roasted aubergine stuffed with tomatoes, onion, and olive oil. A masterpiece of Ottoman cuisine that has been on Turkish tables for centuries.
Simit
Turkey’s circular sesame bread — sold by street vendors everywhere, eaten for breakfast with tea and white cheese. A daily ritual for millions of Turks.
Turkish Tea
Çay in a tulip-shaped glass is Turkey’s social currency — served everywhere, at all hours, always free in a market where you’re browsing. Never refuse.
Getting Around Turkey
Turkey’s domestic flight network is excellent and affordable — Istanbul to Cappadocia (Kayseri) takes 1h20. Turkish Airlines and Pegasus cover all major cities cheaply when booked ahead.
Long-distance buses (Metro Turizm, Kamil Koç) are comfortable, affordable, and connect every city — Istanbul to Antalya takes 10 hours overnight. Rental cars open up Cappadocia’s valleys, the Aegean coast, and Anatolia’s interior at excellent prices.
FAQ — Turkey
Do I need a visa for Turkey?
EU, UK, US, Canadian, and Australian citizens can get an e-Visa online before travel (€30–45). Apply at evisa.gov.tr at least 72 hours before arrival. Some EU nationalities get a free visa or visa exemption — check current rules.
What is the best time to visit Istanbul?
April–June and September–October are ideal — warm, lower humidity, longer days. July–August is hot and very crowded. December–February is cold but atmospheric, with far fewer tourists.
Is Turkey expensive?
Turkey offers exceptional value — one of Europe’s best-value destinations. A mid-range trip costs €80–140/day. Istanbul’s restaurants and hotels are affordable by any Western European standard. The Lira has made Turkey very competitive for European visitors.
Is Turkey safe for tourists?
Istanbul, the Aegean/Mediterranean coasts, and Cappadocia are popular tourist destinations with millions of annual visitors. Standard city precautions apply in Istanbul’s busy areas. Check current travel advice for eastern regions near the Syrian border.
What makes Turkey unique?
Turkey sits at the crossroads of European, Middle Eastern, and Central Asian civilisations — which means its food, architecture, and culture are unlike anywhere else. You can walk from a Byzantine church to a Roman theatre to a Seljuk mosque in the same hour.
