Australia Travel Guide
Opera Houses, coral reefs, and the world’s most ancient landscapes
Why Visit Australia?
Australia recalibrated my sense of scale. I knew it was big — but standing at Uluru’s base, or looking out from the Blue Mountains, or sailing between the Whitsunday Islands, you feel the bigness in your bones. In 11 years of travel, few countries offer such variety: world-class cities, the planet’s oldest indigenous culture, the Great Barrier Reef, and vast red desert. Australia is worth every penny of the long-haul flight.

How Much Does Australia Cost?
Food & Drink in Australia
Barramundi
Australia’s prized white-fleshed fish — barbecued, grilled, or in fish and chips by the harbour. Seek it fresh in Far North Queensland.
Meat Pie
The unofficial national food — flaky pastry filled with minced beef and gravy, from every bakery and sporting ground in the country.
Bush Tucker
Kangaroo, crocodile, and emu feature in contemporary Australian restaurants alongside wattleseed, lemon myrtle, and other indigenous ingredients.
Flat White
Australia (alongside New Zealand) gave the world the flat white — a perfect ratio of espresso to silky microfoam. Melbourne’s café culture is the gold standard.
Getting Around Australia
Domestic flights are essential given Australia’s vast distances — Sydney to Cairns is 3 hours flying but 30+ hours driving. Qantas, Virgin Australia, and Jetstar connect all major cities. Book in advance for the best fares.
Rental cars are perfect for coastal road trips (Great Ocean Road, Pacific Coast Highway) and outback exploration. Driving is on the left. Australia’s distances are deceptive — always carry extra water when driving in remote areas.
FAQ — Australia
Do I need a visa for Australia?
Yes. Most Western nationalities need an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) — apply online for €15–20 before travel. Australians living abroad — obviously exempt! The ETA allows 90 days per visit within a 12-month period.
What is the best time to visit Australia?
Australia is so large that ‘best time’ depends entirely on the region. Sydney and Melbourne are best September–November (spring) and March–May (autumn). Queensland and the north are best April–October (dry season). Winter in the south (June–August) is mild, not freezing.
How much does Australia cost?
Australia is one of the world’s more expensive travel destinations. Budget on €170–260/day for mid-range travel. Accommodation is the biggest cost — camping and hostels bring budget travel closer to €70–110/day.
How long do I need for Australia?
At minimum 2–3 weeks for the east coast highlights (Sydney, Melbourne, Great Barrier Reef). A full circuit including Uluru and Western Australia requires 4–6 weeks. Australia rewards a long visit.
Is Australia dangerous?
Australia has a (partly deserved) reputation for dangerous wildlife — but in reality, the biggest risks are sun, sea, and driving fatigue on long outback roads. Follow beach safety flags, apply sunscreen religiously, and don’t underestimate driving distances.
