Fiji Travel Guide
The Pacific’s warmest welcome, whitest beaches, and bluest water
Why Visit Fiji?
Fiji surprised me by being more than its postcard. The beaches are genuinely extraordinary — but what makes Fiji special is the people. The Fijian warmth isn’t a performance for tourists, it’s cultural — and being welcomed into a village, sharing kava, and watching a meke by firelight is an experience no beach photo can capture.

How Much Does Fiji Cost?
Food & Drink in Fiji
Kokoda
Fiji’s version of ceviche — raw fish marinated in coconut cream and citrus with chilli. Fresh, light, and completely tropical.
Lovo
Food cooked in an earth oven — whole pigs, fish, and root vegetables slow-cooked for hours over hot stones. The centrepiece of any traditional celebration.
Cassava
Fiji’s staple root vegetable — boiled, baked, or fried. Dense, starchy, and surprisingly satisfying with coconut milk.
Kava
Fiji’s ceremonial drink made from ground pepper plant root — mildly sedating, earthy, and the traditional way to welcome guests. Always accept a bilo (bowl) when offered.
Getting Around Fiji
Seaplanes and water taxis connect Viti Levu to the outer islands quickly — Mamanucas are 20–45 minutes from Port Denarau Marina. The Yasawa Flyer catamaran does the Yasawa chain daily.
Domestic flights reach Taveuni, Savusavu, and Kadavu from Nadi (30–60 minutes). For island-hopping on a budget, the Yasawa Flyer is both transport and adventure.
FAQ — Fiji
Do I need a visa for Fiji?
Most Western nationalities (EU, US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand) can visit Fiji without a visa for 4 months.
What is the best time to visit Fiji?
May to October (dry season) is the classic Fiji travel window — sunny days, lower humidity, calmer seas. November to April is the wet season with occasional tropical cyclones, though many resorts offer significant discounts.
Is Fiji expensive?
Fiji ranges dramatically in price. Budget backpacker travel (Yasawa Islands) is affordable at €60–100/day. Mid-range resort stays run €140–240/day. Ultra-luxury private island resorts (Laucala, Kokomo) can reach €3,000+/night.
What is Fiji known for besides beaches?
Fiji’s warm, welcoming people — genuinely considered among the world’s friendliest. The Fijian culture, kava ceremonies, lovo feasts, and meke (traditional dance and storytelling) make it far more than just a beach destination.
Is Fiji good for diving?
Exceptional. The Somosomo Strait near Taveuni (Rainbow Reef) and the Beqa Lagoon (shark diving) are world-class. Visibility typically exceeds 30m, water temperature 26–28°C year-round.
